A personal biography

Abdul Jabbar grew up in Oldham, Greater Manchester having moved to the UK from Bangladesh when he was 12 years of age. He attended Breeze Hill School and Oldham College.

His interest in politics started unusually early, perhaps because he found himself in a community of people who had come here to build a better future for themselves and those around them. He has supported the Labour Party as a school boy, campaigning for Labour at every election.  A member of the Labour Party for 23 years, he has held various positions within the Branch; including the Vice Chair of the Oldham West and Royton Constituency Labour Party.

Abdul has been a local Councillor since 1994, representing Coldhurst ward on Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council.  He has served as Chairman of the Finance & Resources Overview & Scrutiny Committee and in June 2004 he was elected as the youngest-ever Mayor of Oldham; and was awarded the accolade of Mayor of the Year for 2004/2005. He is currently shadow cabinet member for Adult Care.

An expert in housing management and policy he has worked in housing for 24 years and is currently a Housing Manager. He has an MSc in Housing Management from the  University of Salford and is a Fellow of the Charted Institute of Housing. He helped to form the AKSA Housing Association (now part of the New Charter Housing Group) in the mid 1980’s to address the housing needs of Black and Ethnic Minority people.

He is a prolific community worker and has extensive voluntary sector experience. Outside of housing his other passion is education. He has been a school Governor of his local Secondary School for 18 years and is governor at the Oldham College. He was also a member of the Greater Manchester Learning and Skills Council. In his Mayoral year he established a charity called Oldham Education Trust which gives bursaries and awards to encourage and inspire students of all communities of Oldham to reach their full academic potential.

His other activities include membership of two Tenants’ and Residents’ Associations in Oldham. Previously as a teenager he founded the Oldham Bangladeshi Youth Association to provide sporting activities for young people and also assisted the Oldham Bangladeshi Association in its work and helped to secure the funding for the Association’s flagship Millennium Centre in Oldham.
